What Makes Super Tuscan Wines Unique?
There’s nothing quite like Super Tuscan wines – thanks to the fact that each variety has something unique. You’re likely to find a range of great options here in Tuscany – after all, this is where they were first created. With so many different varieties and something special to look forward to, you’re sure to fall in love with the beverages on offer.
Why are Super Tuscan wines so different?
One of the main reasons why these types of wines tend to be so exclusive is because they don’t follow the DOCG or DOC classification system, meaning that they’re made with different ingredients and techniques when compared to traditional Tuscan wines.
The classification system was put in place to ensure that all wines were created to a certain standard, but a number of winemakers in Chianti felt like the rules and limitations prevented them from creating better wines. Super Tuscan wines were invented when these innovative individuals began to experiment with their produce and processes (like using international grapes instead of traditional Italian ones).
Grape variety isn’t all that can make a wine a Super Tuscan, however. As long as the techniques used are different (for example, if the ingredients are aged differently), this type can be made with the usual grapes.
All Super Tuscans now feature an IGT Toscana label, which sets them apart from other wines and makes them far easier to identify for those who may have little knowledge of the wine industry.
Incredible Super Tuscan wines
If you plan to spend a vacation in Tuscany, you’re sure to want to visit an authentic winery or vineyard and grab a bottle of Super Tuscan wine for yourself – but which ones should you look out for?
Sassicaia
One of the first ever created was Sassicaia – making it a very special beverage indeed. It was first made in the 1940s, but it was only commercially sold in 1968 – before this point, it was a private wine only offered to those close to the maker.
L’Apparita
Made in the Chianti Classico hills by Castello di Ama, L’Apparita is a delicious Super Tuscan made purely from Merlot. This is well known for being the first wine to be made 100% with this ingredient – and because of this, it has set the bar fairly high for other Merlot wines.
Guado al Tasso
The elegant and supple taste of Guado al Tasso has made it a favorite among wine connoisseurs across the globe. There are hints of fruits, tobacco, spices, and licorice in the flavor, and it’s made using Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot grapes.
Masseto
Once called Merlot, Masseto earned its name in 1987 and has been famous for its interesting taste for quite some time now. While made with Merlot grapes, you’re sure to pick up on the chocolate, berry, and plum flavors that have been incorporated, too.
