Tuscany’s Most Breathtaking Cathedrals

There’s so much to love about the incredible Italian region of Tuscany; from the many authentic wineries, to the friendly and welcoming locals. Because of this, you’re likely to find that there are plenty of ways you could spend a vacation here – but regardless of what you plan to do, you’re sure to want to see some of the magnificent cathedrals on offer.

Abbazia di Sant’Antimo

Located just outside of Montalcino, Abbazia di Sant’Antimo is an incredible cathedral that’s well worth a visit for anyone in the area. This site is impressive because of its historic beauty, rather than decorations (like so many others on the list). You’re sure to enjoy the calm atmosphere inside, too.

Duomo di Pisa

The beauty of Duomo di Pisa lies in the exceptional design and decoration of the structure.  Made from pale slabs of marble, this cathedral is certainly a pleasure to look at – and better yet, it’s located right next to one of Tuscany’s most famous landmarks, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This means that you could kill two birds with one stone and take in the magnificence of both sites.

Pistoia’s Cathedral of San Zeno

Not many people know of Pistoia, but if you head to the Piazza Duomo, you’ll see one of the region’s most beautiful churches; Pistoia’s Cathedral of San Zeno. You’re sure to find the bell tower and Baptistery stunning – and that’s not all, as there’s plenty of beauty inside, including a silver altar and Giovanni Pisano’s pulpit.

Duomo di Florence

The octagonal baptistery and the freestanding bell tower are just two of several things that make the Duomo di Florence a fantastic landmark. You’re sure to enjoy seeing this magnificent site up close, or you could instead view it from a distance while enjoying a nice drink or meal at one of the many great cafes dotted around. If you’re visiting Florence and you’re in the area, it’s worth spending at least half an hour here.

Siena Cathedral

You’ve probably seen pictures of this magnificent church before – after all, it’s one of Italy’s greatest Gothic Churches. This alone makes it an incredibly popular site, but when you also take the beauty of the structure into consideration, like the iconic black and white striped marble exterior, it’s really not hard to see why it gets so much love.

Arezzo, Church of San Francesco

Most of those who visit this cathedral don’t actually come for the beauty of the church itself, but instead for the famous Legend of the Cross fresco that’s located here. Painted by Piero dell Francesca, this is one of the greatest fresco cycles in the world and well worth checking out. Aside from this, the actual structure of the church is just incredible; you’re sure to fall in love with this amazing piece of architecture.
